Grace WoodruffFor Photo Assignment 4, I chose the category macro. I took photos of little pumpkins and apples to continue my fall photo theme, but I chose to use my mom's camera lens that specializes in taking photos that are up close and blurring the background. My favorite photo is one of my apple photos that has an assortment of green-red apples. Unedited Best PhotoEdited Best PhotoThe only edits I did on this photo were increasing the brightness and contrast. InformationAperture: f/2.8 Shutter Speed: 1/30 ISO: 400 Other PhotosThis photo looks a bit different than the others for the lighting because I took it with the flash on. What I learnedFor Photo Assignment 4, I learned that taking photos with a specialized lens can really enhance the photo and create better photos overall. My mom's lens really helped captivate the imperfections and spots on the apples and I like how it makes the apples look more natural, versus how many photographers take photos of food looking very unrealistic and perfect. Macro photography has taught me that a photo can be interesting without having a lot going on in the photo and a simple subject can have a big impact and be very pleasing to the viewer.

Grace WoodruffFor this assignment, we had to take multiple photos and convert them to panorama photos by photoshop. I took all of my photos at school, where the hallways are big and there is a lot of room to take panoramas. I like how open the photos look especially the photo on the stairs in the Commons. My 5 Panorama PhotosHere are my horizontal panorama photos Here is my vertical panorama photo: What I learnedI learned from this assignment that it's simple and easy to take panorama photos as long as the camera is set up properly. In my vertical panorama photo, the focus was a little bit off which is why the center is blurry, but I like the photo so I kept it. To take the photos I had to turn the camera to manual so that the lighting and focus didn't change for every photo. All in all, the assignment was interesting and fun, but also challenging at first because learning new techniques is always a challenge.
Grace WoodruffFor Photo Assignment 3, I chose to do black and white photography. I liked the photos I took, however the color of the lighting was not very pleasing, so black and white seemed to be the best fit for the photos. Because there isn't any color, the viewer can notice the details better. For my photos, I also went with a fall, halloween theme which I really like. Best PhotoInformationShutterspeed: 1/15 Aperture: f/4.2 ISO: 1600 I edited this photo for brightness and I also converted it to black and white. What I learnedFrom this Photo Assignment 3, I learned that it's important to have enough light for the photos in order for the photo to not look grey, and flat. A lot of contrast in the photo before and brightness will create more shadows and cool dark and light effects. I really liked doing black and white because it reminds me of old photographs and I tried to capture somewhat of a vintage look by photographing still life such as statues, jars, or pictures.
Grace WoodruffFor the Photo Assignment 2 I took portrait photos of my sister Ella. Most of the photos are fairly close up, however I changed my viewpoint many times for different photos. My favorite photo was of her laughing which I think is interesting and funny too. It shows more emotion than the smiling photos. Best PhotoInformation:Aperture: f/5.6 Shutterspeed: 1/30 ISO: 280 I didn't edit the photo. Other Top 5 PhotosThese photos are ranked on how close to the best I think they are. What I learned I learned from this assignment that it's important to think about lighting for photography. For my best photo, not only did I pick it because of her facial expression, but also because the lighting was better in that photo. The two photos directly above were taken with flash and I like them but the shine on her hair looks kind of bad. All in all, portrait photography to me makes use of natural lighting and the landscape around the subject.
Photo RetouchingFor this assignment we were asked to recreate a photo based on some steps and were given a photo to work off of and a photo of what it should look like. Although my computer had many issues regarding the stamping and painting tools, I was able to recreate the photo and make it fairly similar to the demo photo. Below are my "before" and "after" photos. BeforeAfterWhat I learnedI learned from this assignment that there are many steps and processes to retouch a photo. Retouching photos are a lot more complicated than they may seem. Also, I learned that many times my computer won't do exactly what I'm trying to achieve, but I ended up with satisfactory results and I'm pretty happy with the final photo.
Grace WoodruffFor my second photography assignment, I've chosen Portrait as my category. This seems like a fun category because there are so many different ways you can do portrait photography. Below are a few ideas I have for portrait photography from Pinterest. All credit goes to Pinterest. These are not my photos. I really like these photos because they include elements like bubbles, or confetti which adds a fun touch. They are shot from different angles and look very pleasing from either the colors or black and white. I will want to recreate some of these but make them my own.
Grace WoodruffFor the Photo Assignment 1, we were asked to take many photos pertaining to the category we chose. In my case, I chose the category Food. I took many photos of food, and the most delicious photos were the steak and potatoes, and the apple pie. Best PhotoInformation:Aperture: f/4.2 Shutterspeed: 1/60 ISO: 1100 Also, I didn't edit the photo. Other Top 5 PhotosI like these pie photos, however to me the lighting was not pleasing. In this photo, I focused on the bread and the background more than the foreground. I like the idea of food photography from a bird's eye view, but compared to my best photo, I didn't like these as much. What I learnedIn this assignment, I learned that food photography is a lot harder than it seems. I had to carefully place the food on the plate so that it didn't look messy or uneven. Also, by adjusting the camera, I could use the light in my kitchen to my advantage so that the photo was dark but not too dark that it was hard to see. Some things that worked well for me were taking photos when there was still natural sunlight. The pie photos were taken around 9:00 at night so the only light was indoors. The steak and potatoes photo was taken earlier in the evening so the natural light didn't make it look so warm. Another thing that worked well was focusing on a specific part of the food or certain food items. I liked how the steak and potatoes were in focus for my best photo whereas in the other photos I took with a bird's eye view, everything was in focus. All in all, I learned a lot about how to photograph food and what conditions are needed for the best shots.
Grace WoodruffFor the Pop Art photoshop assignment we were asked to follow directions to create colored Pop Art pictures. Additionally, we took a photo of ourselves and someone else to learn several basic photoshop techniques. Original PhotoPop Art Photo #1Pop Art Photo #2What I learnedIn this assignment, I learned how to use layers, guides, resizing the canvas, and more in Photoshop. Also, I learned that there are many steps and processes, and knowing how to use these techniques can help me later in the trimester to edit my photos.
Grace WoodruffShutterspeed#1#2#3#4#1 Shutterspeed: 0.5 #2 Shutterspeed: 1/13 #3 Shutterspeed: 1/40 #4 Shutterspeed: 1/125 With these images I was trying to show the blur of my leg moving. In the more blurry photos, my shutter speed is very low and in the more crisp photos, the shutter speed was high. Aperture#1#2#3#4#1 Aperture: f5.6 #2 Aperture: f20 #3 Aperture: f32 #4 Aperture: f36 For these photos, I was wanting to achieve a blurred background for the photos with the smaller aperture. As for the photos with a more visible and clear background, I used a larger aperture. What I learnedWhat I learned from this assignment is that aperture and shutter speed affect photo quality and how they look immensely. By learning the differences between large and small aperture and shutter speeds, I can apply my knowledge to future assignments and photos to achieve pleasing photos fit well with the light and environment.
Grace WoodruffThe Composition Assignments 1 and 2 gave an introduction to basic camera techniques and skills. These included 11 elements of composition which helped create more stunning photography. BalanceColorDepth of FieldFramingLinesPerspectiveRule of ThirdsSpacePatternTextureSymmetryWhat I learnedI have learned a lot about camera techniques from both Composition Assignments and the skills can be applied for photos I will take later in the Digital Photography class. Personally, the most important element of composition I learned was balance and also space because I had not used them much in photography before. They will definitely help me, and I can already see the improvement between photography now and two years ago when I took Multimedia. |
